I asked 10 out-of-the-box questions to startup co-founder Sanjai Murali to better understand his experience and journey to success.
Sanjai Murali, Founder and CEO at JOGO Health Inc.
1. If you could spend a day shadowing any other startup founder, who would it be and what would you hope to learn?
Rushika Fernandopulle, Founder of Iora Health that later became One Medical. Learn about building ecosystem needed to scale.
2. What unconventional or unexpected experiences in your life have influenced your approach to building this company?
As a high school kid, I volunteered at a free clinic as a lab assistant in the diagnostics lab. Life is an opportunity for acts of service - JOGO's mission serves an unmet need.
3. What were some of the most unexpected skills or lessons you picked up from your first job that you still use today?
People matter the most. All things being equal, people are the ultimate differentiator.
4. Looking back, what was a ‘crazy’ idea you had for your business that turned out to be pivotal?
We never thought there was enough data to support using JOGO for tremor related to Parkinson's. However a patient convinced us to provide the treatment which led to good outcomes which further led to a pilot study and ultimately led to a Mayo Clinic investment in JOGO.
5. Can you describe a moment when you felt the most doubt about your startup, and how you overcame it?
Several moments of doubt. However, outcomes experienced by our patients convinced us to stay the course.
6. What’s a piece of advice you ignored at the start but later realized was valuable?
I can't recall any.
7. What unconventional or surprising way did you find to earn money as a child or teenager?
I did not work for wages as a teenager. Although, I did volunteer at a free clinic.
8. Looking back, how has the way you value and earn money evolved from your first dollar to now?
Used to equate money to time spent early in my career. That has evolved to equating money to value creation.
9. If you could time travel to any period in history, where would you go and what would you do?
Admire several historical figures - Einstein, Gandhi, Lincoln, Ben Franklin. However, I don't wish to time travel. The best moment is always now.
10. What’s the quirkiest habit or ritual you have that helps you relax or unwind?
Counting the several blessings and expressing gratitude via prayer.
Thanks Sanjai for the interesting and truthful answers.
